Does a red card count as 2 cards in betting?

Short answer

A red card counts as 1 or 2 cards depending on the bookmaker. In bet365's Number of Cards in Match market a red card counts as 2, while Sky Bet's Over/Under Cards counts a straight red as 1 and a second yellow sending-off as 2 (each from the bookmaker's own rules, checked 17 Oct 2026).

Confirmed for 6 of 9 bookmakers from their own terms. Last checked

Why the same match can settle differently

Take a match with 3 yellow cards and 1 straight red card. bet365, Unibet and BoyleSports count that as 5 cards (3 plus 2). Sky Bet, Paddy Power and William Hill count it as 4 (3 plus 1). So an over 4.5 cards bet would win at the first three and lose at the others, on the same match.

Cards markets and booking points markets

A cards market counts cards. A booking points market gives each card a points value instead. Unibet, for example, counts a yellow as 10 points and a red as 25, with a maximum of 35 points per player (Unibet's UK rules, rule 21, checked 17 Oct 2026). We haven't confirmed booking points values at the other bookmakers, so check the market's own rule.

Cards that never count

At all six bookmakers we could confirm, only cards shown to players on the pitch count. Cards shown to managers, coaches and other staff do not, and bet365 also excludes substitutes and players already substituted. Cards shown after the final whistle don't count at any of the six. Paddy Power and William Hill do count cards shown at half-time.

Extra time and cards

Total cards markets settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time at bet365, Sky Bet, William Hill and BoyleSports, so cards shown in extra time don't count. Player card markets can differ: Unibet's Player to be Carded includes extra time unless stated, while Paddy Power's Player to be Booked covers normal time only.

Questions

Does a red card count as 2 cards at bet365?
Yes. In bet365's Number of Cards in Match market a yellow counts as 1 and a red as 2. A second yellow is ignored, so a player sent off for two yellows counts as 3, the most one player can count for.
Does a red card count as 2 cards at Sky Bet?
No. In Sky Bet's Over/Under Cards market a straight red counts as 1. A player sent off for a second yellow counts as 2: the first yellow and the second.
Does a red card count as a booking?
In cards markets, a red card is counted as a card, but how many it counts as depends on the bookmaker, as the table shows. For player markets, check that market's own rule at your bookmaker.
Do cards shown to managers count?
No, at every bookmaker we could confirm. Only cards shown to players on the pitch count.
Do cards shown after the final whistle count?
No. All six bookmakers we could confirm ignore cards shown after the final whistle.
